Brejesh S. Gurukkal

Located near the peaceful beaches of Mararikulam in Alappuzha, Marari MVG CVN Kalari offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience the ancient traditions of Kalaripayattu, the oldest martial art of Kerala. Guided by the traditional Gurukkal lineage, the centre preserves the authentic system of Kalari training, Kalari Yoga, and Kalari healing therapies.

Marari MVG CVN Kalari is a branch of the MVG (Malabar Vasudevan Gurukkal) Tradition CVN Kalari group, founded by the legendary Yogacharya Malabar P. Vasudevan Gurukkal. The centre is led by Brejesh S. Gurukkal.
Brejesh S. Gurukkal began his training in Kalarippayattu in 1988 under the guidance of Yogacharya Malabar P. Vasudevan Gurukkal and his younger son P. V. Sivakumar Gurukkal, who currently heads the MVG CVN Kalari in Kollam district, Kerala. In recognition of his dedication and mastery, Brejesh S. Gurukkal was awarded the title of “Gurukkal” in 1999.
In 2000, he joined the Kerala Police, fulfilling the wishes of his Gurukkal. In 2003, he submitted a project on Kalarippayattu at the Kerala Police Academy in Thrissur, which was officially approved in 2005. Over the following two years, he trained police cadets in Yoga and Kalarippayattu, contributing to the physical and mental training of the force.
After 24 years of dedicated service in the Kerala Police, he opted for voluntary retirement in September 2024. He is now fully devoted to promoting the ancient art of Kalarippayattu and offering authentic Kalari-based treatments to people from around the world.

Vandyasree Kottakkal Kanaran Gurukkal

Kottakkal Kanaran Gurukkal was a towering figure in the history of Kalarippayattu, especially revered for his expertise in the Northern Style (Vadakkan Sampradayam). A master not only of martial techniques but also of Marmashastra (the science of vital points), his knowledge extended beyond combat into the realm of healing, making him both a feared warrior and a respected healer. In a remarkable demonstration of his dedication, Kottakkal Kanaran Gurukkal, in his forties, sold more than 150 acres of his ancestral land and invested all his wealth into mastering Kalarippayattu. His commitment to learning and preserving this ancient art form was unparalleled. At the age of 69, he took Veerasree C.V. Narayanan Nair Gurukkal as his disciple, and together, these two masters were instrumental in reviving Kalarippayattu after nearly a century and a half of suppression under the British ban. Kottakkal Kanaran Gurukkal's teachings emphasized discipline, agility, and unwavering adherence to traditional techniques. His tireless efforts to preserve the integrity of Kalarippayattu laid the foundation for its resurgence. Veerasree C.V. Narayanan Nair Gurukkal

Veerasree C.V. Narayanan Nair Gurukkal was a distinguished figure known for his unwavering dedication to Kalarippayattu, particularly in preserving the traditional Northern Style (Vadakkan Sampradayam). As the leading force behind CVN Kalaries, he was steadfast in maintaining the purity of Kalarippayattu, ensuring that the art form was passed down in its most authentic form. Veerasree C.V. Narayanan Nair Gurukkal’s expertise was not limited to martial prowess; he was also a master of Marmashastra (the study of vital points), which made him an authority in both combat and traditional healing practices. Pathriyil Gopalan Gurukkal, a dedicated disciple of Veerasree C.V. P.V. Sivakumar Gurukkal

P. V. Sivakumar Gurukkal is a distinguished Kalaripayattu master and traditional Kalari healer of the renowned CVN Kalari lineage of Kerala. He is the younger son and disciple of Yogacharya Malabar P. Vasudevan Gurukkal, inheriting a profound legacy of martial wisdom, Kalari yoga, and traditional healing. P. V. Sivakumar Gurukkal is a renowned master of the Malabar Vasudevan Gurukkal Tradition (MVG) of Kalarippayattu, dedicated to preserving the purity of the Northern Style, now heading the MVG TRADITION groups and leading MVG CVN KALARI at Kollam. With decades of experience, he has trained countless students in the art, healing practices, and philosophy of Kalari. Beyond the traditional arena, Gurukkal has brought Kalarippayattu to global platforms as a film fight choreographer for acclaimed movies such as Veeram and ARM, showcasing the martial art’s strength and beauty to international audiences. He also conducts training for the world-famous theatre group MITU, expanding the reach of Kalari into performing arts worldwide. Mythological Origins

Created by Parashurama, who learned from Lord Shiva to protect the land of Kerala. "Kalari" means training hall; "Payattu" means combat practice.

3rd Century BCE

Historical roots traced to this period. Flourished under the patronage of local rulers during the Chera and Zamorin dynasties in Kerala.

12th–16th Century — Golden Age

Reached its zenith. Legendary warriors — Chekavars — served kings in famous Ankam (ritual duels), where single combat decided battles.

18th–19th Century — Colonial Suppression

Banned by the British. Survived in secret, passed down from Gurukkal to student in hidden training grounds, preserved by unwavering devotion.

20th Century — Revival

Revived by dedicated masters. Today Kalaripayattu is recognized globally as both an ancient martial system and a complete path of physical and spiritual wellness.
